In the book Gerard Taylor: Early Work, the following phrase accompanies the image of the Piccadilly lamp: “Design has dealt for too long with form first – form should follow idea.” Piccadilly is thus the distillate of his design aesthetic, his “idea” for a perfect lighting solution.

A table lamp in decorative laminate and painted and chrome-plated metal, Piccadilly grafts two lightweight supports onto a solid base, supporting colored and perched geometric parts, topped by a shield.

Taylor became part of the Memphis group in Milan just after graduating, in 1982, shortly prior to the launch of the debut collection, and he immediately translated its philosophy into form.

Gerard Taylor studied Product Design at the Glasgow School of Art and Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s, alongside a generation of designers that included Ross Lovegrove, Jonathan Ive, and Jasper Morrison. After graduating in 1982, he was hired by Ettore Sottsass in his Milan office. He became a constant source of inspiration for the young Taylor. Around the same time, he was invited to participate in the Memphis experience. Upon returning to London, Taylor founded a design studio with Daniel Weil. In 1991, Taylor established his eponymous creative consultancy, focusing on furniture, product design, interior architecture, and strategic consulting. Until his death in 2025, Taylor continued to design residential buildings, primarily in London, and to write about contemporary workplaces, on whose dynamics and changes he has lectured extensively around the world.
