CARROT

Nathalie Du Pasquier focuses on contrasting colors for Carrot, a cylindrical blue ceramic vase hand-painted with two decorated bands created using oven-sublimated decorative decals. Completing the series are the Cauliflower and Onion fruit bowls—the names of the objects ironically refer to vegetables—also in ceramic and once again characterized by the vibrant pattern of pink spots outlined in black on a yellow background.

Nathalie Du Pasquier, French artist and designer, was born in Bordeaux in 1957 and has lived and worked in Milan since 1979. In 1981, Du Pasquier, a self-taught designer, became a leading figure in the Memphis movement. Her numerous designs for decorated surfaces such as fabrics, carpets, furniture, and plastic laminates played a key role in creating the unmistakable Memphis style. Despite her success as a designer, from 1987, when Memphis dissolved, painting became her primary activity. Du Pasquier's ongoing research encompasses paintings, sculptures, drawings, models, constructions, carpets, books, and ceramics, constantly exploring the boundaries between representational and nonrepresentational, tangible and intangible, reality and imagination, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.
