BROKEN MIRROR Almost Black

What does it mean to be broken? Not your ordinary wall mirror, the BROKEN MIRROR by Gufram e Snarkitecture transcends its functionality to become a work of art that defies the boundaries of traditional form-function correspondence. The reflective surface of BROKEN MIRROR is encompassed by a frame of soft polyurethane to create the illusion of a portal-esque break in the wall. Beyond reflecting the surrounding space, it creates a mesmerizing optical illusion: that the room extends into the outside world or another environment, an intriguing and mind-altering effect full of dynamic energy.

This innovative contemporary design emerged from the first collaboration between Gufram and New York duo Snarkitecture, a team composed of artist Daniel Arsham and architect Alex Mustonen. Drawing inspiration from the collaborative spirit of the pioneering Italian radical designers of the Seventies, the BROKEN MIRROR explores the intersection of art and architecture with a shared curiosity and experimental spirit as the hero of the “Broken” series, which includes the “Broken” square mirror and “Broken” bench.

The “broken” polyurethane frame surrounding the mirror is meticulously crafted by hand, ensuring that each BROKEN MIRROR carries a subtly distinct concrete-like texture. This wall-like texture of the mirror’s frame is achieved using Gufram’s patented Guflac® paint. Applied entirely by hand, Guflac® gives the polyurethane a uniquely detailed texture while maintaining its elasticity, allowing for unparalleled aesthetic experimentation.

With BROKEN MIRROR, Gufram and Snarkitecture have reimagined the ubiquity of the mirror, transforming it into a captivating work of art that challenges perceptions and invites viewers into a world of surreality.

Snarkitecture is a New York-based studio established in 2008 by Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham to investigate the boundaries between art and architecture. The name is drawn from Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of The Snark, a poem describing the “impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature.” In its search for the unknown, Snarkitecture creates architectural-scale projects, installations, and objects.
They have collaborated with many brands mainly from the field of fashion and interior design, and their mission is to convey a new Radical spirit. They are proponents of the contemporary idea of “Anti-Design” with work that is architectural in scale but with elements of artistic experience.
