PRATONE® Infinito

PRATONE® is undoubtedly one of the most unique seats in contemporary design history. Since its inception in 1971, this postmodern masterpiece, designed by Giorgio Ceretti, Pietro Derossi, Riccardo Rosso and fashioned from soft polyurethane, has enthralled our imaginations with its surreal form and playful essence. Blurring the boundary between the natural and the artificial, the PRATONE® is a marvel that elevates the sitter amidst its towering, abstract blades of “grass”. The colossal stalks reach skyward, imitating nature and creating a captivating cradle that beckons relaxation. PRATONE®: one of the most significant pieces of radical design to this day.

This unparalleled seat, a true ode to radical design, defies our conventional ideas and expectations of interior decor. Each of the 42 long and soft blades of grass, meticulously worked and finished by hand over the course of five weeks per piece, embody the artisanal soul of PRATONE®. The unmistakable "Pratone" stamp, pressed into the base of each seat, further emphasizes its unique identity.

In 1972, PRATONE® cemented its position as a groundbreaking design when it graced the cover of the catalogue for the renowned exhibit "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape," held at the MoMa in New York City. Recognized as one of the 100 masterpieces of design history, PRATONE® holds a prominent place in the esteemed Vitra Design Museum. It has graced the halls of many renowned museums worldwide, including MUDE in Lisbon and the Musée des Beaux Arts in Montreal. 

In 2025, the modern history of PRATONE® reaches a new milestone, enthusiastically carrying forward the legacy of its creators Ceretti, Derossi, and Rosso. Thanks to Gufram's cutting-edge technologies, the new PRATONE® Infinito can take shape and make its way into any environment, domestic or otherwise. Similar in appearance, texture, and color to the 1971 PRATONE®, this new edition features many significant innovations. For example, the consistency is slightly firmer than the original PRATONE®, making this historic piece even more suitable for relaxation and rest; a more usable domestic sculpture and even more suited to interaction. PRATONE® Infinito is mass-produced thanks to the technological innovation that Gufram is constantly working on. PRATONE® Infinito is an exquisite testament to Gufram's advancing working methods and expert craftsmanship, which allow for the brand's continued evolution while honoring even its most historic pieces.

Since the mid-1960s, Giorgio Ceretti, Piero Derossi, and Riccardo Rosso have interpreted architecture and design as a means of engaging in the social and political struggles of the period. Reunited in Turin, with the technical assistance of Piero Gilardi, they designed their first polyurethane foam furniture with an anti-design attitude and approach. Over time, their work took on an educational, sociopolitical, and cultural function, so much so that in 1972 they were invited to participate in the exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, curated by Emilio Ambasz, at the MOMA in New York. Their work was recognized and acclaimed by international critics. The team then continued its political activity within the radical movement through seminars and critical-theoretical contributions with various collaborations. After the active, lively, and spirited revolutionary experience of the 1970s, each of them chose to pursue their own path as designers, educators, and architects, either individually or through other collaborations.
