MADRAS

Looking at Madras we seem to observe a work of art resting on a table, probably taken down from the wall. Only later do we realize: “the painting is the table.” 

Created in 1986 by Nathalie Du Pasquier, Madras is made of white lacquered wood and decorative laminate formulated by the artist herself.

In this table, Du Pasquier has returned to her impressions of travel in Africa and India, making this laminate with its eclectic, decorative style that links back to the fabrics of traditional dress. In Africa the way people dress is magnificent! Their way of wearing colors, of telling stories through motifs, is completely different from ours, Nathalie explains.

Nathalie Du Pasquier, French artist and designer, was born in Bordeaux in 1957 and has lived and worked in Milan since 1979. In 1981, Du Pasquier, a self-taught designer, became a leading figure in the Memphis movement. Her numerous designs for decorated surfaces such as fabrics, carpets, furniture, and plastic laminates played a key role in creating the unmistakable Memphis style. Despite her success as a designer, from 1987, when Memphis dissolved, painting became her primary activity. Du Pasquier's ongoing research encompasses paintings, sculptures, drawings, models, constructions, carpets, books, and ceramics, constantly exploring the boundaries between representational and nonrepresentational, tangible and intangible, reality and imagination, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.
