D'ANTIBES

When he created D’Antibes, George J. Sowden was thinking about a medicine cabinet, a showcase in a pharmacy, or perhaps just a small bookcase.

The D’Antibes cabinet, designed in 1981 by George J. Sowden, is like a display case with a geometric structure in lacquered wood, supported by long legs. The piece stands out for its primary colors, in contrast with the two sides that are screen printed with decorative motifs. The glass doors open for access to a compartment divided by two shelves.

Every element has been skillfully highlighted by Sowden with a different color: pale blue for the feet and the top, bright yellow for the legs and sides, intense red for the doors, which open to reveal two shelves for versatile display of objects.

George J. Sowden is a designer and product developer with extensive experience in various fields of industrial design, from the development of mass-market electronic products to limited-edition artisanal products, including ceramics and glass, textiles, and carpets. He studied architecture at Gloucestershire College of Art in the 1960s. He moved to Milan in 1970, where he began working with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti. In 1981, he co-founded Memphis. That same year, he opened his own design studio, through which he developed an industrial design consultancy practice while continuing to develop his research.
