Description
CASTILIAN

The elegant Castilian, designed by Aldo Cibic in 1984, is seductive in its simplicity. The square module captivates the viewer with the impression of an incomplete form. The bookcase seems like a primitive diagram, enhanced by the vivacious colors and patterns typical of Memphis.

Castilian can act as a space divider or a wall bookcase at the same time. The white base contributes to enhance the black and orange scheme of the solid vertical and horizontal supports, as they expand outward into space.

“I don’t believe I have left any trace of my work… maybe something in Aldo Cibic,” Sottsass said in his last interview. Looking at Castilian, in fact, we seem to glimpse the forms and colors of certain bookcases by the great designer, with whom Cibic began to work when he was only 22 years old.

Aldo Cibic was born in Schio, in the province of Vicenza, in 1955. In 1981, as a partner at Sottsass Associati, he was among the first protagonists of the Memphis movement. Among his numerous projects as a visionary designer and architect, “Microrealities” (2004) and “Rethinking Happiness” (2010) were presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale. With the Cibicworkshop, a multidisciplinary research center, he dedicates himself to the development of alternative and sustainable design typologies for architecture, interiors, and design, aimed at enhancing the local area and defining a new cultural, emotional, and environmental awareness. In 2018, due to his high profile, he was appointed professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. He is also currently a professor at the Domus Academy of the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Milan and at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice.
