GRITTI

The shelves of Gritti seem to be interrupted at the center in a surreal way, and emerge in a disorderly way from the sides of the grid.

Designed by Andrea Branzi in 1981, the Gritti bookcase in wood covered with decorative laminate and natural wood finish is composed of metal structures and wooden shelves, with just two shelves in glass. The linear character of the apparently “normal” bookcase is broken up by the intersection of horizontal and vertical parts, based on a rhythm of asymmetrical wedges.

Andrea Branzi writes: “With the experimental workshop of Memphis, research begins on a new expressive energy for objects. In its apparently superficial approach, Memphis has great critical depth.”

Andrea Branzi, architect and designer, graduated in Florence in 1967 and lived and worked in Milan. Branzi was part of the avant-garde Radical Architecture movement, which began in 1966 with the "Superarchitettura" exhibition at the Jolly 2 gallery in Pistoia. From 1964 to 1974, he was a partner at Archizoom Associati, a key figure in the Florentine Radical Architecture movement, and is one of the most respected voices in the movement. In Milan, he developed the themes of "New Italian Design", which led to the birth of Alchimia and Memphis. In 1982, Branzi opened his own studio to focus on architecture, urban planning, interior design, and industrial design. In 1994, he received the prize "Compasso d’Oro ADI alla Carriera".
