BOMBAY

Ironically skeptical about the form and idea of a table, the eclectic concept of Bombay makes it a veritable anti-modern icon. 

Created in 1986 by Nathalie Du Pasquier, Bombay combines geometric forms underscored by strong chromatic contrasts. The triangular base in lacquered wood supports three white cylindrical legs and a multicolored round top clad in decorative laminate by the designer herself. 

The names of Memphis objects are never selected by chance. Bombay is a reminder of India, visited in youth, suggested here by the rounded rings resembling the pillars of temples. As Du Pasquier says: Everything I see inspires my art.

Nathalie Du Pasquier, French artist and designer, was born in Bordeaux in 1957 and has lived and worked in Milan since 1979. In 1981, Du Pasquier, a self-taught designer, became a leading figure in the Memphis movement. Her numerous designs for decorated surfaces such as fabrics, carpets, furniture, and plastic laminates played a key role in creating the unmistakable Memphis style. Despite her success as a designer, from 1987, when Memphis dissolved, painting became her primary activity. Du Pasquier's ongoing research encompasses paintings, sculptures, drawings, models, constructions, carpets, books, and ceramics, constantly exploring the boundaries between representational and nonrepresentational, tangible and intangible, reality and imagination, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.
