ATTICA TL

From collapse comes creation. Born as if from the “fall” of a traditional Grecian column, the CAPITELLO lounge chair, ATTICA armchair, and ATTICA TL coffee table by Studio 65 prove that deconstruction can lead to rebirth. Each piece mimics a portion of a traditional column in the Erechtheion style of the Athenian Acropolis: the CAPITELLO is an oversized and elegant lounge chair derived from the column’s head or “capital”—a radical and striking armchair that commands attention in any space it finds itself.

The set is completed with the ATTICA, a rounded armchair with a soft, graphic cushion, and ATTICA TL, a cylindrical side table with a reversible mirrored tabletop, both born from the columnar shaft. When they come together, they form a domestic sculpture that is so much more than just furniture. Ruins transformed into creation.

As with many of Gufram’s works, the set is hand-crafted from soft polyurethane in a texture that carefully resembles the stone after which it is modeled and finished in a Parthenon white shade with Guflac® Ultra, a versatile coating that allows it to be used indoors or out. This tension between expectation and reality brings a new level of wonder to the user: one expects the hardness of stone and is instead greeted by a plush softness that bends the senses. 

This set has made its way into some of the most important museums: the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum in New York are both home to editions of the triptych. The appeal of the trio is everlasting: a monument to the passing of time and the ways in which the materials of our world are born anew, wherever the column may fall.

During the course of 1965, a group of architecture students started thinking that they wanted to become architects when they grew up. However, having encountered the grown-up world (architectural and otherwise), they decided that, although they wanted to become architects, they didn’t want to become grown-ups. So, to make their dream come true, and following the example of Peter Pan, they built their own little happy island and called it Studio 65.
These young architecture students were also painters who painted with powerful colours. As all young people do, they loved life to the degree of being ready to fight in order to build a fairer world, where imagination and their form of expression could find a space and be appreciated. They loved American Pop Art and films from the New America Cinema, the Nouvelle Vague, and the Italian avant-garde; Carmelo Bene, lonesco, Beckett and the Living Theatre. They listened to rock and jazz music, and they read Mayakovsky, Marcuse, Montale, and Asor Rosa, Tafuri and Simone de Beauvoir.
